My Grandfather
"Amid the dimly lit maze-like stacks of books beneath the Rare Book and Manuscript Library," there is a scholarly man about 80 years old working six stories down in a high security, environmentally controlled vault. As he rummages through ancient manuscripts dating back to the eighth century, that were hand written and hand painted by ancient scribes and monks, that were written in the oldest language known to man. As he stood in front the artwork, he marveled at the intricate handiwork and affectionately he runs his hand across an antique embroidered Tibetan tapestry, struggling to find the words in English to explain the religious painting.
That was my grandfather, Wesley E. Needham. He was a self-taught scholar at Yale University who received an honorary master's degree for his work, notably he has become the leading American authority on Tibetan Buddhism and their culture. According to, The New Haven Register, "He has been named in various Who's Who in national and international listings, prepared sections on Tibet for the encyclopedia, and has written a variety of articles on that mystical land so isolated in the mists of the Himalayan Mountains."
He was an architectural draftsman for the gothic buildings at Yale University, worked at the Yale, Beinecke Rare Book Library where he translated ancient manuscripts, and was a liaison to Tibet and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, but foremost he was my grandfather.

Looking Back
My grandfather was originally a landscape architect and graduated from the University of Connecticut. He later became an involved in the architectural drafting of the Gothic style buildings at Yale University in 1920. According to an article in the New Haven Register, my grandfather worked on famous Gothic Buildings such as, the law library, named Sterling Library and law graduate building, named Trumbull College. Yale University is one of the three Ivy League Universities in America, the others being Harvard, and Princeton University. Later in his life he was the architectural draftsman for the New Temple, of Tibet.
Later, he earned an honorary degree from Yale University for his work on Tibetan Buddhism and the translation and cataloguing of ancient holy manuscripts. For him this was a hobby, he began this project in 1953 and had worked on it almost 40 years. He was a self-taught scholar and learned how to read, write, and translate the oldest language known to man, called ancient Sanskrit.

LHASA THE POTOLA TO TIBET - HOME TO HIS HOLLINESS THE 14th INCARNATION OF THE DALI LAMA

Tibetan Buddhism
He became very interested in how cultures communicate religion and philosophical ideas through art. After researching Gothic Architecture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, he wandered through the Oriental section of the museum and was enamored with the sophistication of the metal work done in Tibet and Nepal. It was there, that he became interested in Tibet. In order to better understand the Tibetan people he began checking out books in the library and began to study the language. "He found names out people of Tibet out of the National Geographic and starting writing letters to them so he could practice writing their language. They responded to his letters, and came to him through his writing. In 1966 he attempted to go to Tibet, but was unsuccessful, but he did visit the Dalai Lama in India.
The Tibetan Religion, and the Dalai Lama became a way of life for him. He became very knowledgeable through translating thoughts from ancient sages, and scribes from earlier than 8,000 AD, in a land far away that he would never be able to visit. The Dalai Lama donated to the Rare Book Library, "The Tibetan Collection," these were works of art that became his primary occupation. One book contained 96,800 pages. According to the article my grandfather wrote for "World Order" he translated the biography of Buddha dating back to 528 B.C."

"His consciousness transcended all levels of the intellect, and attained the highest Perfection, the Climax of Wisdom.
He became the Enlightened One, The Buddha"
Another very important manuscript that my grandfather translated was the recorded hierarchy of the reincarnations of a boy named Gandun Truppa, the recognized Rebirth of the Dalai Lama. The first identified incarnation of Gandun Truppa, later known as the Dalai Lama II (1475-1542), but until then no one had been recognized as the rebirth of a person previously recorded in Tibetan history. Although fourteen Dalai Lamas are recorded in Tibetan history, their followers consider them all as one Dalai Lama in fourteen bodies.
A Film Kundun was directed Martin Scorsese Released: Deccember 25, 1997, A True Story of Kundun, The 14th Dalai Lama. Also a Film Seven Years in Tibet with Brad Pitt,
My Grandfather believed in reincarnation, and through the complex and intricate works of art, he could understand their religious beliefs on reincarnation and mantras. Although, I have never heard these words spoken, I too know what they mean, and what they say, for example, the Tibetan Monks were considered servants of peace, and through their mantras expressed an enlightened words like "Om Mani Padme Hum." Meaning, the essence of form, sound, and mind, and reciting these mantras purifies the subtle channels in the body to receive the unceasing "Energy of Compassion."
The Dalai Lama named my Grandfather translator and liason to Tibet and Protector of Tibetan Collection. He had reached a state of enlightenment, and the Tibetans referred to him as having attained knowledge beyond the limits of art…" and "knowledge extensive like the sky." Through his wisdom, he was able to write many articles on Tibet, notably the "Encyclopedia Britannica", and articles published in "World Order." Sadly, Tibet was taken over by the Chinese Communist Government in 1959 and is still under Chinese Rule. This country was closed to the outside world. The Dalai Lama, was forced to leave Tibet, and is still in exile in India and has never been able to return to his native land.

When The Students Meet their Teacher
About the same age as my Grandfather had become interested in Eastern Philosophy, I too had a profound experience which would change my philosophy of life and my religious beliefs. My philosophy of life is that there comes a time when you are faced to challenge your own belief system, and that you may find that every thing you once believed in, is not as you once believed.
When I was five years old, my Father was a fighter pilot in the Navy and he was out at sea when my mother, my baby brother, and I went to my Grandparents to stay until he came back. That summer, my Grandfather had a group of Tibetan people come to visit us. I remember so vividly a holy man named Rinpoche, and The Dilowa. He was a master monk and teacher for the Dalia Lama. My Grandfather had become friends with the Dalai Lama and had visited him in Nepal. The Dalai Lama and Yale University had commissioned my Grandfather to catalogue sacred holy manuscripts from Tibet. They were estimated to be about 2,500 years old. China had taken the country over and the Dalai Lama had fled his native country to India where he had escaped prison or death.
The story begins to remind me of the Raiders of the Lost Ark. My Grandfather was very knowledgeable and began working to preserve these ancient manuscripts. My Grandfather was a true saint, and a Master Guru. He was a very humble man and I would smile when he would say “he was practicing to be a gentleman,” and of course I was his only Granddaughter, allowing him to say, “I was his favorite.” I followed him everywhere like a shadow, and I truly loved the time I spent with him. He would teach me how to write in Tibetan, and he taught me about their beliefs. He catalogued ancient holy manuscripts, which are archived in the Rare Book Library at Yale University. He would often take me there, and my Aunt was the Head Librarian. Somehow, as time went by, I had spent almost 8 years off and on living with my Grandparents. That was hard since I lived in Cornado, California.

When The Lightning Came
My journey began one summer day, four years ago,.” now over 25 years ago,” I was on the phone with my Mom and I told her I couldn’t talk any more. I was struck with this incredible fear and told my Mother that “God was coming.” I truly thought that it was “The Coming.” But now I think that there is a coming, or calling through symbols and ancient Sanskrit. There is an unmistakable gateway that you must pass through to cross to the sacred worlds. I could explain this in more detail, but that would take some time. I went outside, scared that I had not complied with what I had been told spiritually. speaking That all the material things that were so dear to me, were of no importance to me if I were dead. How meager an existence I had without the true power of God. I felt or the impression I got was that it was a masculine force. I was petrified! “OMG”
There was such an incredible storm outside, which in Florida that is not unusual, but there was something totally different about this storm. All of the sudden I was standing in the middle of a lightening storm. I was standing in the middle of three trees within a twenty-foot radius. They were struck down by lightening. I mean struck down dead, splinters! Later, I took pictures of the leftover stumps of the trees that were struck by lightening; just outside my apartment. I couldn’t believe I was still alive. I had been standing right in the middle of those trees. There was this incredible sonic boom, it was louder than anything I had ever heard. It was like being hit by lightening and living to tell about it. I couldn’t tell if the sonic boom was in my head or the crack from the lightening hitting me. Later I would look back and see that the little book on the Kundalini would be my guide to what I had and would experience. After the lightening came I would fast for exactly forty days. What I mean by fasting was, I did not eat for forty days, did not spend money for forty days, did not drive a car for forty days, and became completely emerged in the sublime worlds of the Universe.

The Warriors Vision Quest
After the lightening came I would fast for exactly forty days. What I mean by fasting was, I did not eat for forty days, did not spend money for forty days, did not drive a car for forty days, and became completely emerged in the sublime worlds of the Universe. I did not consciously decide to fast. Imagine not eating for forty days. That was truly a purification of the body, and I felt there must be a very important reason. I know that this is an experience that I could not possibly have done on my own. I had no idea what was happening, nor did I know how long this would go on. These enlightening experiences are described in all religions of the world, but the actual journey’s are best described by the Shamanic journeys to the upper and lower worlds. They are sacred voyages of the subtle worlds of the elusive Gods and Goddesses, the Archangels, sacred places in the Earth, Holy Sages, Animal Guides and the Spirit of the Universe. These journeys are not easily traveled and I had reason to fear for my life. You encounter evil spirits, and souls of the dead. They are as real in that dimension as this one. They look like things you see in the movies. You must conquer the shadow of you soul and fight your inner demons. You have to journey across the river of fire, and overcome evil spirits. You must learn to use your weapons well. It is described in all hero stories, good versus evil, and conquering the dark night of the soul. All that we think as an imaginary world has a true realism in another dimension. That is the place where all great stories come from. When it is over there is a great spiritual celebration: Gen. 8:6 And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah (Know) opened the window of the ark which he had made: The Ark of the Convenant. When it was over, I was left with a deep impression, an enigma, questions which I will always search for the most secret answers.
The Vision: The first time I realized I had a vision of my soul, it just sort of stuck in my mind, day after day. I felt as though I was a spiritual warrior. The vision was very clear. I had a sword and a shield in my hands, I was dressed as a warrior and there were two ravens, one was on my shoulder the other circling above. There was a huge polar bear by my side. The vision seemed to stem from the bottom of my spine. I didn’t know what it meant, but I was about to find out. There was this huge man standing behind me who I believed to be someone named Thor. There were two mountains and snow and ice, maybe like a glacier. The sun was setting in the middle. At the time, I did not know much about myths and legends, so I just thought of it as a picture.
